I t is tough to single out just one part of London. Around every corner the English capital hides true gems of his- tory, culture and art; streets where the greats walked – real ones or those created in the imagination and re- corded on the pages of its creators... However, in the tourist diadem of London, one place stands out with colours, life, diversity and stories. Camden, a town in the city, a mar- ket, a place where rails cross and which was celebrated by Amy Winehouse. This is one of the few areas of London where street art is not banned. On the contrary, Camden is a real urban art gallery, also made famous as the battleground of perhaps the biggest graffiti and street artists – King Robbo and Bank- sy. It all started in one Camden tunnel that was painted by Robbo and covered over by Banksy, and the war of paints lasted for years, until the death of King Robbo. Here on the streets you will be able to listen to the be- ginnings of the hippie movement, punk and rock ’n’ roll, which date back to the mid-1960s. You can still plan a visit to great gigs at the famous“Roundhouse”. Built way back in 1846 as a place where trains were repaired, it later became a warehouse, before losing its purpose until the 1960s, when it became a centre for new music. Pink Floyd held one of its first concerts there, with Messrs Jagger and McCartney listen-

haps the Marathon Bar is, where for years people have eaten kebabs late into the night, when everywhere else has fallen silent (it had a permit to sell alcohol until morn- ing). This place is famous for the fact that Keith Richards played there until dawn for fun, while Amy Winehouse played “drinking games” with Oasis’ Gallagher brothers and the great duo from the band The White Stripes. Of course, Amy is the face of Camden, as the lost soul with a glorious voice who grew up on these streets, who died at home in this neighbourhood, forever seen in its explo- sion of colours, smells and tastes. She has also gained a monument in Camden, which has quickly become a tour- ist attraction. Standing out as the first market in Camden is Lock, which opened in 1973 as a collective of workshops with a rich industrial heritage. Artists were given space to sell their works, while customers gained a unique opportunity to see how those works are created in front of their eyes. The Lock is still known today for its eclectic style and mix of culture. And the most ambitious buyers will enjoy the maze of open-air stalls. You can find absolutely everything here: handicrafts, clothing, jewellery, food, antiques and souve- nirs, from vintage to futuristic... Most people will think of the Lock when you mention Camden and the market, but there is also Stables Market, the largest sales area, where you can really buy anything that crosses your mind. If you are in London this February, now you know - Camden must not be missed.
