BANGKOK BANGKOK

his is a place where you won’t know how to cross the street, where the hu- midity and noise cling to

M esto gde nećete znati da pređete ulicu, gde se vlažnost i buka lepe za vas, mirisi mame, tak- sisti varaju, ugostitelji muvaju… A vi? Užinajte mango i stiki rajs, a probajte tajlandsku palačinku – roti.

you, where scents entice, taxi driv- ers cheat, restaurateurs lure... And you? It seems to you that you’ve just arrived from another planet. In Bangkok you’ll witness mis- ery and splendour, piles of waste and plastic bags, but also the in- dustrious, hospitable Thai peo- ple, who make the best food. And you won’t be able to stop eating. Forget about fancy restaurants, the best tastes are on the streets, and they’re also affordable. Plac- es where you can eat and drink are primarily located in China Town (a wide boulevard filled with eateries that’s packed with people), Khao San Street, which turns into a real bazaar each evening, or the some- what more tranquil Ram Buttri Road (exuding the spirit of ancient Thai- land), with its improvised mini res- taurants. For breakfast try Jok porridge, for lunch Pad Thai, and for dinner a spicy sausage with ginger on a stick. Sweeten up with durian, the sweetest of fruits, with an extreme- ly unpleasant odor. Snack with mango sticky rice and be sure to try the Thai pancake – roti. There are countless possibilities. Never- theless, Thai people don’t tend to speak English well, so you’ll strug- gle to negotiate, and struggle with spiciness. There “hot” really burns. If you are nevertheless in favour of a more luxurious alternative, you can always visit a rooftop bar in Si- lom or Sukhumvit, where there are also major shopping centres. Bang- kok is, unofficially, a city of 18 mil- lion people, and there everything is available to you. The best destination for shop- ping is Chatuchak Weekend Mar- ket (set aside four hours), while the “Floating Market” is also rec- ommended, and for a touch of cul- ture visit the Grand Palace, Wat Pho Temple, Wat Arun Teple, Golden Mount Temple and the Ancient City. A boat trip along the Chao Phraya River is an unforgettable experience (if you opt for the city line, you’re advised to close your mouth during the trip) and also be sure not to miss the Sky Train, as well as the unsurpassed tuk-tuk au- to rickshaws.

Bangkok je grad kontrasta: modernih nebodera, drevnih hramova i šarenih ulica Bangkok is a city of contrasts: modern skyscrapers, wooden temples and colourful streets
