Sveti Sava,

TAJNA VEČERA / LAST SUPPER

L ent, prayer and personal faith certainly constitute an important part of the Easter tradition among Serbs, but investing in historical buildings that are linked to key events from the life and suering of Christ represent particularly important junc- tures in the local past. Thus Domentian, the biographer of Saint Sava, reports to us that during his rst pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1230, the rst Serbian Archbishop acquired, for the needs of establishing a Serbian monastery in Jerusalem, the famous Mt. Zion Coenaculum! This is a place that was once the home of St John the Baptist, the most beloved and youngest of Christ’s disciples, or the place where some of the most important events in Christian history took place – such as the washing of the feet of the apostles, the Last Supper, the descent of the Holy Spirit unto the apostles and the Ascension of the Holy Virgin. The coenaculum (an archaic term meaning upper room), the room on the upper oor – alongside Bethlehem Cave, Golgotha hill where Christ was crucied and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre – represents one of the sites for pilgrims testifying to the life and deeds of Christ that are of the greatest importance to the Christian faith. The Last Supper is certainly the event most closely asso- ciated with Easter, and in order for the investment of Saint Sava to be absolutely clear, one ought to understand the importance of pilgrimages in the Middle Ages, but also the obligation of rulers and the church to take care of their faithful pilgrims on distant and insecure journeys. Specically, creating one’s own monasteries and residences in the Holy Land also meant organising appro- priate accommodation and taking care of pilgrims from the then Serb lands under the administration of the Nemanjićs . Unfortu- nately, this monastery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, disappeared from the annals of history in the mid 13 th century, when it was destroyed during one of the numerous destructions of Jerusalem.
