HARD STUFF

KAD NAMEŠTAJ IMA DUŠU, PUSTITE GA DA DIŠE WHEN FURNITURE HAS SOUL, LET IT BREATHE

Who understands wood, understands that it is not perfect, that there are knots and cracks, and who doesn’t understand it should try with plastic, says this creative Slovene with a status in Serbia

I n the city’s industrial zone, in a hang- ar where 12 skilled people work to- day, every piece of furniture has its own story. Each has passed through the hands of the carpenter whose name appears on the sales ticket, each is alive, warm and the only one of its kind. A small company called Hard Stuff is today doing big jobs. Their tables, beds and mirrors are delivered all over Europe, while their name is a guarantee of high-quality, natu- ral furniture, and customers are lining up... And yet, the story of Rok Skele, a Slo- vene with status in Serbia, started so that a film could be shot about it. In the space of barely a few square metres in his old garage, where Rok rolled up his sleeves and took a tool to make the most beau- tiful place for lunch out of old oak. And all because his “psychic” wife was boring enough, as Rok would say in jest, to pes- ter him to start a job that she knew in ad- vance was his life’s vocation. That’s be- cause when they bought an old house in Ljubljana, Rok made everything himself – wardrobes, sliding doors, sink basins... To her, it was logical for him to transfer such talent to his work, and after much deliberation he decided to try his hand. No sooner said than done, he decided to present his creations at the next Furni- ture Fair in Belgrade, which happened to start in 14 days. What any relatively cau- tious man would see as a short and im- possible deadline only served to inspire

Trends in design remain focused on raw, heavy material; minimalism is going out of fashion and I’m glad about that Trendovi u dizajnu ostaju na sirovom, teškom materijalu, minimalizam izlazi iz mode i drago mi je zbog toga
