G enerations born in Mali Zvornik, an attractive town beside the river Drina, lived oblivious to the kind of secret that was hid- den in the rocks of Boranja mountain. His- tory textbooks made no mention of the royal city, not a word, while locals passed by one of its 12 exits, closed with mas- sive iron doors, on a daily basis. There are no official written records or photographs of this place.
due precisely to its proximity to the bor- der with Bosnia. With the exception of the anonymous Russian who was the main ar- chitect and an expert in mine digging, only King Alexander I Karađorđević knew about the secret city in the rocks, the construc- tion of which he ordered in 1930, and a few of his closest associates, of course. Built under the secret code name “Stone Girl”, it was designed to accommodate 5,000 people during wartime and to serve as a royal military command centre. After decades of secrets, people began entering the belly of the slopes of Boranja mountain to see what was hidden behind the steep rocks hanging over the bank of the Drina, near the old railway bridge of King Alexander Karađorđević. Behind black metal doors weighing tens of kilos, where the corridor begins... - The underground city of Karađorđević was built between 1930 and 1934, un- der the direct orders of King Aleksandar I Karađorđević. Two-thirds of the city are completed, while a third is unfinished, due to construction having been halted follow- ing King Alexander’s assassination in Mar-
Chroniclers of that time, mostly locals from the Drina area who were in- trigued by this topic, preserved the odd detail in their private notes, while oral tradition saw it passed on from mouth to mouth. And then, ten years ago, talk began to be heard in public about the king’s city on the bank of the Drina, right on the border with Bosnia… Quiet- ly at first, then increasingly louder... It was then discovered that the construction of the Karađorđević’s underground city was the best kept secret in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; a matter of strategic importance,
