The singer masterfully balanced silky melo- dies with weighty subjects, explor- ing drug addiction on Flyin’ High (In the Friendly Sky), highlighting the ghettos that upper-class Ameri- cans overlook on Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), making a plea to nurture on Mercy Mer- cy Me (The Ecology) and offering a statement on post-war trage- dy with the title track. Having tran- scended into a cultural landmark, What’s Going On still sounds fresh 50 years after the fact. It’s also a sadly still-relevant reminder of America’s unshakeable injustices.
