ALUMNI UPDATE: Dr. Jenny Nguyen, PharmD, Class of 2014
Born and raised in Las Vegas, Dr. Jenny Nguyen, PharmD, BCPS, BCPPS, is happy to be serving her local community as a Pharmacist and Pediatric Clinical Specialist at Dignity Health, St. Rose Dominican – Siena Campus, working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on treating preterm and medically fragile infants. As part of a team, Dr. Nguyen enjoys the interdependence between the various healthcare providers—including dieticians and respiratory therapists—knowing that this teamwork and mutual respect yields the best patient care and most ideal patient outcomes. "My opinions and recommendations are always considered and valued.” Looking back, Dr. Nguyen acknowledges that she was eager to get her education completed so that she could start her career, and Roseman's accelerated PharmD appealed to her, allowing her to fast-track her education and get to work sooner. Dr. Nguyen enjoys working alongside the parents of her patients as well, who may be new to parenting and the NICU. There are meaningful interactions daily in this role. “One meaningful interaction I had was with a mother who was hesitant and afraid to allow her baby to receive a Vitamin K injection. Together with the doctor, we explained the potential risk of Vitamin K deficiency bleeding in newborns.
I took the time and explained that she should consider it as vitamin supplementation rather than a medication – merely supplementing until babies are old enough to have adequate stores and obtain from external sources like food. The mother felt reassured and consented to the injection. The doctor was also appreciative.” Being open to new opportunities, different practice areas and settings enabled Dr. Nguyen to find her profession. She encourages all aspiring pharmacists to “embrace new experiences and don't hesitate to try something different. Say 'yes' to every opportunity that comes your way.” The path may not always be straightforward and linear, and openness to the unexpected can yield exceptional discoveries. Alongside her family, Dr. Nguyen likes to travel, explore new places, parks, and restaurants. She also likes to be active through bouldering and rock climbing.
