Kako u svom poslu,
Modesty is from the Balkans, but she’s first and foremost a woman. So, how did a woman succeed in winning over the hearts of readers? We asked one of the pioneers of the comic book publishing and creator of “Darkwood”, Slobodan Jović... “Heroines haven’t experienced too much fame in almost any of the world’s countries, and that includes Serbia. Let’s take the example of well-known character Betty Boop, primarily a heroine of animated film, but also in part well-known as a fashion trend. She forged an almost negligible ca- reer as a comic strip heroine. It was actual- ly another animated hero that emerged as a serial character in Betty Boop cartoons – Popeye the Sailor - soon emerged as a more significant animated and comic series than her. Other heroines didn’t fare much better – and that is, unfortunately, a trend that de- veloped strong roots in almost every country. That was not the case with Modes-
female emancipation at the time, in which she could use her independence, ability, self-con- fidence and other qualities to impose herself as a role model for every woman and, quite honestly, many men too. However, this was far from being the most decisive factor. The credit for such enduring success primarily belongs to the author, who utilised his out- standing storytelling abilities to lead our he- roes through the decades, ensuring that they weren’t trapped in the epochs during which they were created, but rather changed with the times in which they acted, just as the problems they were facing changed - from the LSD and hippie scene of London in the 1960s to the terrorism and biological weap- ons of the ‘90s,” explains Jović. But Modesty isn’t a feminist. She’s too independent and true to herself to be able to enter the mold of any kind of movement. She is timeless, and that’s also why she’s so successful – both in her work and among the faithful readers of her comics. Peter created a masterpiece that’s sim- ply swallowed up to-
