U Đerdapskoj klisuri, tačno naspram Trajanove table i na mestu gde je Dunav najdublji, nalazi se naj- veća isklesana skulptura u Evropi. Reč je o liku poslednjeg dačanskog kralja Decebala. Skulptura isklesa- na u steni viskoka je 40 metara i la- ko može da vas zavara. Iako izgleda kao da potiče iz antičkog perioda, reč je o delu koje je završeno 2004. godine, a inicirao ga je i finansirao Josif Konstantin Dragan, najboga- tiji Rumun modernog doba. Ako po- gledate natpis u podnožju skulptu- re ispisan na latinskom Decebal rex – Dragan fecit, jasno će vam biti ko je ktitor, jer lepo piše Kralj Decebal – napravio Dragan. Više od deset godina je 12 alpi- nista vajara radilo na tom projektu. Radnici su živeli na brodu na Duna- vu i radili su u dve smene, a da bi se popeli do svog radnog mesta, sva- kog dana im je trebalo 40 minuta.
DECEBAL NAJVEĆA ISKLESANA SKULPTURA
T he Iron Gates Gorge contains the largest rock sculpture in Eu- rope, located opposite the Tabu- la Traiana plaque and at the spot where the Danube is at its deepest. The sculpture represents the image of Dece- balus, the last king of Dacia. The sculpture was carved into a 40-metre-tall rock face and can easily trick you – although it ap- pears as though it originated during an- cient times, the work was actually com- pleted in 2004, and was commissioned and financed by modern Romania's rich- est businessman, Iosif Constantin Drăgan. A look at the Latin inscription at the foot of the sculpture,“DECEBALUS REX – DRA- GAN FECIT", will make it clear to you who the benefactor is, because it neatly states “King Decebalus—Made by Drăgan”. Work on this project took more than ten years and included 12 rock-climbing sculptors. Workers lived on a boat on the Danube and worked in two shifts, requir- ing 40 minutes every day to climb to the place where they were working.
