Planina Avala jedan je od simbola Be- ograda, sa tornjem koji se uzdiže nad gradom i Spomenikom neznanom ju- naku, a šume prekrivaju više od 70 odsto njene površine. I najopušteni- ja šetnja Avalom postaje nepredvi- diva avantura ako znate da tu raste oko 600 biljnih vrsta, mnoštvo leko- vitih i retkih; da tu postoji osam pla- ninskih izvora sa čistom vodom; da je na Avali pronađen avalit – plavozeleni mineral, jedinstven na svetu; da se na njenim padinama još mogu naći ar- heološki ostaci; da njeno drveće čuva istinu o brojnim legendama, a prema jednoj su Avalu pohodili i Argonau- ti u potrazi za Zlatnim runom. Avala Mountain is one of the symbols of Belgrade, with its communications tower rising high above the city and its monument to the unknown soldier, while more than 70 per cent of its sur- face area is forested. And even the most relaxed stroll on Avala becomes an un- predictable adventure if you know that it is home to around 600 plant species, many of which are medicinal and rare; that there are eight mountain springs running with pure water; that is was on Avala that the mineral ‘Avalit’ was dis- covered – a blue-green mineral that’s unique in the world; that archaeological remains can still be found on its slopes; that its trees preserve the truth about many legends, one of which claims that Avala was even visited by the Argo- nauts during their quest for the Gold- en Fleece.
