EMMY AWARDS TV battle in pyjamas
Giants like WarnerBros, Universal and Sony have spent decades fighting for as many Oscar nominations and awards as possible, while in the other corner of the ring a silent war has been fought in recent years between Netflix and HBO, in a trench battle for the Emmys T his year’s 72 nd Emmy Awards, which will be held on 20 th September, is playing out to the benefit of Netflix. e streaming giant has secured 160 nominations for itself, breaking last year’s record of 137 set by HBO. e fa- mous cable television and recent streaming giant HBO/ HBO MAX entered this year’s race with 107 nomina- tions, followed by American NBC Television, with 47. It was on 28 th July that the Television Academy published its list of nominated series, mini-series, re- ality programmes, television films, actors, screenwrit- ers, directors and other television workers. Fierce bat- tles will be fought in the categories of Best Drama, Best Comedy and Best Mini-Series. As many as three Os- car-winners have been nominated in the category of Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Television Film: Cate Blanchett for Mrs. America, Octavia Spencer for Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker and Regina King for Watchmen. Oscar-winner Olivia Col- man has been nominated for the Best Drama Actress award for the series e Crown. e favourite to win among the eight nominees in the category of Best Drama is HBO’s drama Succession. In the category of Best Comedy, the audience’s favour- ites are Schitt’s Creek and Dead to Me, but experts be- lieve that previous winner e Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will once again take home the golden statue. Top favour- ites include Unorthodox for Best Mini-Series, Bad Edu- cation for Best Television Film, Jeremy Strong for Suc- cession and Christina Applegate for Dead To Me. Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, the Em- my awards ceremony will be held virtually on 20 th Sep- tember via a video streamed on ABC Television from the main studio. Actors have been sent instructions on what they can wear, so it is possible that, due to the time difference, nominees who will join from the UK or Eu- rope could wear elegant pyjamas.
