HANDICRAFTS ARE NOT OUDATED Knitting has taken Instagram by storm
Both fashion trends and instagram are seriously restoring a focus on some forgotten handicraft techniques, such as knitting, crocheting and macrame knotting
Ko se oprobao u ručnom radu priznaće vam stidljivo da bez obzira na rezultat taj ritual opušta i smiruje Anyone who has tried their hand at handicrafts will admit to you shyly that, regardless of the result, this is a ritual that’s relaxing and calming
S ocial networks and fashion trends have brought some traditional values back into focus. Wher- ever you turn you’ll notice handmade bread baskets in restaurants and macrame knotted swings displayed on popular home decor pag- es, while knitted baskets for small items and hand made knitwear have already become standard. Crocheted Amig- urami dolls have flooded Instagram. And handicraft is something that, apart from its visual dimension and usefulness, also has an emotional dimension. Some- one has invested their own time and emotions in cre- ating that piece. Anyone who has tried their hand at handicrafts will admit to you shyly that, regardless of the result, this is a ritual that’s relaxing and calming. If you weren’t fortu- nate enough to have been taught by your grandmoth- er how to handle knitting needles by knitting an end- less scarf, how to turn needles to create plaits or crochet a table mat, then don’t worry. You can find online tu- torials intended for all stages of knowhow or compe-
tence, in cartoon or video form, encompassing even the smallest details. Find what inspires you, procure the material and just start. Skilled women have even created small jobs for themselves by selling what they’ve knitted using two needles and two hands. Of course, there are trends here as well, so we are particularly joyed that relevant pieces today are being made from strips of recycled cotton T-shirts. at’s how you participate in saving the planet while creating something beautiful. Even when they are not natural mate- rials – rather the remains of plastic bags, tarpaulins and
similar surplus materials – you are still partic- ipating in recycling. e best thing about handicrafts is that you can pull apart what- ever you make and start again. e only constant is the happiness and serenity you ex- perience while knitting.
