12 th December 1731 and sent a report in which he wrote that he didn’t find the plague, but he did come across vampires. The locals were threaten- ing to abandon the village if nothing was done, while the Austrians were aware that the border could not be maintained without an able-bodied population. That’s why they sent an entire expedition to Medveđa, led by Dr Johann Flickinger. What the expedition encoun- tered there was far worse than the most imaginative nightmares. A total of seventeen corpses were exhumed, twelve of which matched the descrip- tion of a vampire – their bodies hadn’t begun rotting even three months af- ter death, and their hair and nails seemed to have grown back. Fearing a rebellion among the locals, Dr Flick- inger ordered that the vampires be be- headed and then burned. Their ash- es were scattered into the river, while the decomposed bodies of those who hadn’t succumbed to vampirism were returned to their graves. After com- pleting the mission, Flickinger wrote the famous Visum et Repertum re- port, which was soon published in numerous European newspapers, causing a real vampire sensation and leading to the great popularity of horror literature and terrible sto- ries about bloodsuckers. Belgrade doesn’t differ from oth- er major cities in that respect. Various parts of the city have spawned their own urban legends, and the book Bel- grade Noir, which was recently pub- lished by American publisher Akashic Books, brings the stories of fourteen Serbian authors that are dedicated to the city’s dark side – from the central streets and municipalities with mys- teries and crimes hiding behind ele-
