Manastir Slanci Agape, trpeza ljubavi
Slanci Monastery AGAPE, TABLE OF LOVE The approach to Slanci Monastery, which is located in the epon- ymous village, passes beside greenhouses, fields and orchards, which provide fresh fruits and vegetables for Belgrade’s open markets. Sev- enteen kilometres from the centre of Belgrade is the Monastery of St. Archdeacon Stefan, better known as Slanci. People actually visit the monastery for spiritual food, and many of those who have stayed in Slanci for the Sunday lunch that is served after the Liturgy have felt what is meant by agape and the table of love. The monastery was founded by King Dragutin Nemanjić, as far back as the end of the 13 th century, but it only flourished in the first half of the 15 th century, when the capital of Serbia was relocat- ed from Kruševac to Belgrade. Despot Đurađ Branković was its re- storer and benefactor, and it was then that the monastery took the Holy Archdeacon Stefan as its protector, and the sanctuary gained the name of a “Great Monastery” among the people, which testifies to the rich cultural and spiritual life of Belgrade during that time. Following the fall of the Serbian Despotate under Turkish rule, in 1459, the monastery was ruined several times and eventually col- lapsed. The construction of today’s monastery began in 1960 and saw it classed as a metoh, i.e. a possession of Hilandar Monastery. The monastery preserves a copy of the icon of the Three-handed Mother of God, which was actually made in Hilandar, on Mount Athos. Slanci is today a male monastery, and monks preparing for life at Hilandar commonly spend some time here first.
