I don’t fly like I used to, but I still try to appear at first glance like a man who’s ready for flight Ne letim kao nekada, ali se još trudim da na prvi pogled izgledam kao čovek spreman za let
Kakva je uloga deke u vašem životu? – Lepa i oplemenjujuća. Kad vi osetite to uzdizanje u životu?
new directions in the world of music, thea- tre, film. Music has been the most universal of artforms since man appeared on this plan- et. Man sang or whistled before he spoke, and everyone understood what he “spoke” ... Le- na has her own journey in the world of notes, just as I have mine in the world of letters. It seems to that hers is prettier. How is the role of grandfather that you play in your life? - Beautiful and ennobling. I heard about the love for grandchildren when I was young, but I did not understand anything they were talking about. And that can’t be described in words – that feeling must be experienced. Of course, like all beautiful things, it’s not easy, but every effort returns as pleasure and joy. Have you ever wanted to live out of Serbia? - If I’d wanted to – I would have. I’ve been on longer or short trips, spent months or years elsewhere in the world, but everything was mostly related to my work. While we shot the film ‘Underground’, I spent almost three years in various European countries, relocating as the film team relocated. I was also ambassa- dor to Portugal, while I have attended many festivals all over the world and many of my premieres around the world. I was in places where I only used to go after having read books from those distant countries. I have travelled and hope to continue. A man is alive as long as he desires to travel. Which of your travels remain forever in your memory? - When I sit in the car with my wife, and sometimes with my children, and we head somewhere we’ve been planning to visit for a long time. Travel is pleasure in the journey itself. Reaching the destination is nice, but less excit- ing. I’d like to tour all countries of the world, to see all seas, rivers, islands, cities ... I don’t have any special wishes, because I know that what I want is unrealisable. Our entire life is a journey through space and time. The English word “elevate” means to lift or rise up. When do you feel elevat- ed in life? - When something nice happens in our family. Personal elevation doesn’t lift me up above the ground as it did when I was young. I’m an old type of aircraft that’s increasingly resembles those that are exhibited in aviation museums. I don’t fly like I used to, but I still try to appear at first glance like a man who’s ready for flight.
Do you even know how many books
you have in your library?
- I don’t know. And they’ve long since not only been in the library room. They’ve con- quered the entire house. I’ll soon be a resi- dent again in a house that belongs to books. What I’d wished for in childhood happened to me – I have lots of books. What is your safe haven in life? - The family. That was the case when I was a child and is the same now, when I have chil- dren and grandchildren. Everything beyond the family is transient, uncertain and very often disappointing. People pass through your life like a train station waiting room. They arrive and depart by train. And you are also travelling, but you’re always calm if you’re lucky enough to return to a home where there’s family. Your daughter, Lena, is a jazz singer, musician and artist. How often do you exchange artistic experiences, advice, ideas...? - We talk about everything we do, but without getting too entangled in the works we do. We sometimes work together, when it comes to a song for film or when we discuss
