This is about fragments and different processes, and all of that comprises the diversity that we want to bring to the exhibition, says Gunnar, explaining the aesthetics of this year’s selection U pitanju su fragmenti i različiti procesi i to sve čini raznolikost koju želimo da donesemo na izložbu, objašnjava Gunar estetiku ovogodišnje selekcije

A look at the list of the 68 artists who are participat- ing in the 2018 Salon, reveals the variety of practises, direc- tions, themes and techniques. Also notable is the fact that there are equal numbers of male and female artists. The oldest participants are the Ice- landic artist Erró, born in 1932, Japanese-American Yoko Ono, born in 1933, Larry Bell from Chicago, born in 1939, and Dušan Otašević, born in 1940. The youngest are Darja Bajagić and Maja Đorđević, both born in 1990.
“We want them all to be in dialogue – both the very popular artists and those who are less known. We try to find artists who have diverse profiles, languages, artistic character and sensibili- ty, so we can present them in creative juxtapositions, to experi- ence the great diversity that exists in the art world, while at the same time creating a special experience. Hence the title‘cacoph- ony’. This is a dissonant situation that is the opposite of harmo- ny. A huge exchange and communication exists between geo- graphically and culturally disparate places, and such a situation produces original artworks”, explains Kvaran, stressing how this cacophony will, paradoxically, have a unique tone. When the most sophisticated sphere of the spirit – art – turns to artificial intelligence, it is clear how much our lives have transformed with digital systems. This is exemplified by an end- less video game conceived by American artist Ian Cheng. This young artist is fascinated by the roots of mankind and the intu- ition of the first human, which is greatly at odds with the con- sciousness of today’s complex man. His video work, ‘Emissaries’, a virtual ecosystem that lasts forever, encapsulates how far into the past and the future contemporary artist can reach. Kvaran highlights the link between art and technology, and explains the new path being taken by artists. “Young artists often study other disciplines, such as sociolo- gy, engineering, computer sciences, before becoming artists. In new conceptual art, this is an important part of the scene. Ide- as are developed and new technologies utilised – including ar- tificial intelligence – in order to bring new possibilities to art.”
