galleries and souvenir shops, but also exclusive brand boutiques, bars and restaurants, and where the scents of sea and fish fuse with the sounds of music. During the summer months, thanks to open-air theatre plays, con- certs and exhibitions, the Old Town becomes the City Theatre, which is also the name of the festival that has enriched Budva since 1987 and provides it with a spe- cial colour and charm. If you are a lover of theatre, un- forgettable stages and scenes of plays preformed under an open sky, visiting this city will surely be among your most beautiful recollections. The fortress was originally raised on an islet not far from the coast, then later connected by a causeway to the mainland, so it is today a peninsula, and you can en- ter the city via one of five entrance gates. Within the con- fines of the Old Town you will find three churches. The oldest of them is the Church of St. Ivan, built in the 7 th century. Believed to have been dedicated to the birth of St John the Baptist, on the northern altar it preserves the great holy object and protector of the City of Bud- va, the icon of the Budva Lady. There is also Santa Maria in Punta - the church of the St Mary the Holy Virgin, built in the year 840, while the youngest of the city’s church- es is the Church of the Holy Trinity from 1804. The Cita- del also contains the remains of the foundation of the Church of St Mary, after which the fortress was named. So, Budva is not only the best place for a good time in Montenegro. It’s much more than that, and it’s waiting for you to discover it...
