KOSIDBA NA RAJCU MOWING ON RAJAC OJ, OBLAČE, NEMOJ NA KOSAČE, OTIŠO MI DRAGI NA KOŠENJE

OH, CLOUDS, DON’T FALL ON THE MOWERS, MY DEAR WENT TO MOW

All those wanting to compete in mowing tough mountain grass get together in mid-July on Rajac near Ljig to show what they can do, but also to save from oblivion the old custom of helping in the countryside. Finally, a top mower is selected, or a đidija, as the one who mows most beautifully and has the prettiest costume, and who was watched the most by the women

Ubrzo se za- čuje i đidija, vođa kosača, koji kosu otkiva onoliko puta koliko je kosid- bi do tada bilo. Utom zasviraju tru-

“Oh, clouds, don’t fall on the mowers, My dear went to mow, He didn’t take an overcoat or umbrella, Rain will soak his white shirt...” W ith these verses, Slobodan Avramović (29), from Slavk- ovica at the foot of Rajac, joins arriving mowers from all over the world to head to the top of the mountain, where the grass is at its highest and thickest. With his scythe on his shoul- der, he listens proudly to the lyrics of the greeting, because they were actually writ- ten half a century ago by his own grand- father, Milojko. And to this day it is a sign that Mowing on Rajac has begun. Soon one can also hear the đidija, the leader of the mowers, whose scythe reveals how
