J ust before travelling to Belgrade, I couldn’t even imagine what the city would be like. The only thing I remember telling myself was to keep an open mind and to wait and see whether the place inspired me. When I got here, the city just blew me away! The peo- ple, the history, the food culture, the fact that there are four seasons, which is com- pletely new for me as I am from India... There was so much for me to learn, see and experience! Belgrade is one city that hides little surprises in everything. Like the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, Belgrade
is like a fortune cookie in everything that it offers. Be it the quality of life, fine-dining or going out to party, you will be pleas- antly surprised if you crack open the heart of the city. I live in Stari Grad, which is a 10 min- ute walk away from the Republic Square in the city centre. The favourite thing about my neighbourhood is that, even if it’s very close to the city centre and the most hap- pening places in the city, it’s a very calm and quiet neighbourhood for families. It makes me feel at home. We have a lot of words in Serbian that are very similar to the Indian na-
tional language, Hindi. It was a surprise to me how those words are the same, like the number 10 for example. Apart from that there are similarities in the re- ligious values too. In India, we don’t have four seasons. We don’t have the sun setting at 8:30pm or at 4:30pm and we don’t have a snowy day — at least I have never experienced it! For me, every day in Belgrade is spe- cial and perfect in its own unique way. The best day would be the day when the sky is lit up at sunset with a wide range of col- ours or even a snowy day. Both are perfect for me with their own natural beauty.
