MUSÉE D’ORSAY
If at the Louvre you wondered where all those beautiful Impressionist paintings are – they are here! In the Musée d’Orsay. Relatively new - opened in 1986 – it pre- serves priceless artistic treasures created between 1848 and 1914. The emphasis is placed on the famous representatives of French Impressionism, such as Renoir, Mane, Monet and Degas, but there are al- so paintings by Van Gogh and Klimt, with sculptures by Rodin and many others. The museum, which is housed in a huge, airy, reconstructed railway station, is extreme- ly functional and impeccably arranged. Entry is much quicker than at the Lou- vre, taking just a few minutes, depend- ing on the crowd (tickets for adults cost 12 euros, while entrance is free for un- der-18s). Behind each image and each au- thor are hidden interesting stories – you can practically stand in front of every im- age, with data from the audio-guide, for seven or eight minutes, and for that to still interest you. Tip: If you have time to visit only one museum in Paris, visit this one.

two adults and two small members, set the goal of visiting several most famous Parisi- an museums over the course of a few days. The expedition was completed successful- ly, and the members – upon acquiring their new extraordinary experience – promised each other to soon undertake a new ven- ture with new museums.
THE LOUVRE
POMPIDOU CENTRE
One of the world’s most famous mu- seums, opened at the time of the French Revolution, it has over 35,000 exhibits and can take days to tour. And if you were to spend a minute in front of each exhibit, that would again be a lot of minutes. Howev- er, it is reasonable to assume that you will have about half a day for your visit to the Louvre, so make the most of the time in the best way you can. It is best to buy tickets (17 euros for adults, with children and young- sters entering free) in advance online, but it is important to specify the precise time of arrival. Metro journey, walk from the sta- tion, security check, entry into the muse- um via the glass pyramid erected in 1989, leaving things in the cloakroom, taking an audio-guide (5 euros). The audio-guide is a Nintendo device that proved a hit with the youngest member of our expedition, who used it as a game. Of course, it is also useful for adults, as soon as you figure out how it works. The Louvre’s museum collec- tion includes artworks from prehistory to 1848, from the walls of the Hammurabi Code to large canvases of Renaissance painters with biblical motifs. Of course, there is also the Mona Lisa, which curiously (how else?) smiles under protective glass, surrounded at all times by dozens of tourists.
The Museum of Contemporary Art, lo- cated in the famous fourth arrondissement, recently celebrated forty years of its exist- ence and it stands out due to its original high-tech brutalist architecture – in accord- ance with its purpose, it is organised like an old-fashioned department store. The exter- nal façade is covered with tubes, while the escalators that carry visitors from floor to floor are also covered in pipes placed on the exterior of the building (which are adored by children and all those who feel like chil- dren). Buying entrance tickets (14 euros for adults, with under 18s entering free) and ac- tually entering takes slightly longer than at d’Orsay, but is still quicker than at the Lou- vre. Apart from the permanent exhibition, we saw the exposed works of American ab- stract artist Cy Twombly (the children were astonished at his scribbles, considering that they did not differ much from their own ear- lier work), as well as an exciting and large collection of modern Russian and Soviet art. Tip: contemporary art is original and often shocking – if you come with children, you will have to explain a lot. However, it’s worth it, because children need to know that art is not just the Mo- na Lisa.
