All the nations fought for freedom and beauty, but they all mutually devastated and hated it. None of these countries make a homeland and fields that nourish that through work, writes this famous writer, among other things, in her collection of essays entitled “Balkan”

B alkan ima, od stvorenja zemlje kroz vekove, kao led, voda i kopno, arhitekturu druma i hrama. Narodi koji su se na njemu čvršće i, izgleda, sud- binski zadržali u novija istorijska vremena, od starih Grka preko Srbije Dušanove i karađorđevićevske, svi se borili – karakteristično – za slobodu i lepotu, ali svi su ga međusobno pustošili i mrzeli, niko od te ze- mlje ne učini otadžbinu i njivu koja se neguje nje radi… Tako piše Isidora Sekulić u tri eseja o Balkanu u dvo- jezičnoj knjižici Balkan (prevod na engleski Vuk Tošić) u izdanju Plavog jahača , koja je u međuvremenu preve- dena i na francuski. U iscrpnom predgovoru i pogovo- ru Darko Tanasković ukazuje upravo na činjenicu koli- ko su i danas aktuelna pitanja koja je velika književnica razmatrala, baš kao i mudre opaske i svojevrsna reše- nja koja je davala. Nataša Marković, osnivač i čelnik Plavog jahača , ističe da svaka generacija treba da iznova iščitava Isi- doru Sekulić. Podseća da je razmišljala s evropskih vidi- ka i svojim duhom i intelektom živela u Evropi Remboa, Prusta, Frojda, Bernarda Šoa… Da je u Londonu drugo- vala sa Virdžinijom Vulf, posećivala njena predavanja o seksualnom vaspitanju, u Parizu vreme provodila sa Anais Nin, u gradu na Seni se upoznala i s Bergsonom i njegovim čuvenim esejom o duši… – Bila je strastan, emotivan pisac. Podsetiću, pre Virdžinije Vulf koristila je formu toka svesti i nije slu- čajno što Dučić kaže da je njena knjiga Saputnici jed- na od najboljih u srpskoj i evropskoj književnosti – ka- že Nataša. A u svojim esejima Isidora Sekulić nastavlja: „Mi ni- kada nismo imali vremena da mirno izgrađujemo svoju kulturu. Ratovi, zbegovi, lutanja, razaranja, građenja na ruševinama, to je naša istorija. Pa i onda kada smo stva- rali, sve je išlo vrtoglavom brzinom, slamalo je ljude (...). Ima nešto vrlo teško u udesu svih ogranaka srpskog na- roda, stalno počinjemo ispočetka. The nations that held themselves there firmly and, seemingly, were destined to stay in more recent historical times, from the ancient Greeks via the Serbia of Dušan and the Karađorđevićs, all fought - characteristically - for freedom and beauty, but they all mutually devastated and hat- ed it. None of these countries make a homeland and fields that nourish that through work... So writes Isidora Sekulić in three essays on the Balkans in the bilingual book“Balkan”[translated into English by Vuk Tošić], published by “Blue Rider”, which has since been translated into French. In an exhaustive foreword and afterword, Darko Tanask- ović points out the precise fact of how topical many of the issues discussed by this great writer are, just like the wise remarks and solutions that she gave. Nataša Marković, founder and head of“Blue Rider”, points out that every generation should re-read Isidora Sekulić. She recalls that she thought from a European perspective, and that in her spirit and intellect she lived in the Europe of Rimbaud, Proust, Freud, George Bernard Shaw etc. That she made friends in Lon- don with Virginia Woolf, attending her lectures on sex education, spending time in Paris with Anaïs Nin, while in the city on the Seine she also met Bergson and his famous essay on the soul... - She was a passionate, emotional writer. Let me remind you that she used the form of a stream of consciousness before Vir- ginia Woolf, and it is not by chance that Dučić said that her book “Saputnica”(Consort) is one of the best works of Serbian and Eu- ropean literature - says Nataša. And her essays Sekulić continues, “We have never had time to peacefully build our culture. Wars, exoduses, wandering, de- struction, building on ruins – that is our history. And then when we created it, everything went at breakneck speed, breaking the people (...). There is something very tough in the collision of all branches of the Serbian people, we constantly start from scratch. After each uprising, every war, every dynasty, from scratch. One at a time we correct and manage, one endeavours, one begins to build a wall around Skadar and walls themselves in Skadar...

UMORNO TLO BALKANSKO Balkan je borba starosti i mladosti. Tlo je isprano, ranjivo, do kostura izmršavelo i osušeno. Umorno je! Pisac ovih redaka ima od putovanja po zemljama dva preimućstva, nepokole- bljiva i sigurna utiska. Jedno je: sirotinja, po svima državama i gradovima, pojasevima i podnebljima. Drugo je balkansko umorno tlo. Jedan i drugi utisak je tačan, posvedočava ga istorija i geografija (...).
TIRED SOIL OF THE BALKANS The Balkans is a fight between old age and youth. The soil is washed out, vulnerable, to skeletons emaciated and dehydra- ted. It is tired! The writer of these lines has from travels arou- nd countries two advantageous, steadfast and certain impres- sions. One is: poverty, around all countries and cities, belts and regions. The other is the Balkans tired soil. Both impressions are correct, as witnessed by history and geography (...).
