B orn in Beirut and resident in Madrid, he learned to perform classi- cal music pieces at highly reputed music schools. Inspired by his Arabic and Jewish roots, he composes his own works, while he has also included in his repertoire Spanish amenco, Argentine tango, gypsy sounds and Balkan ethno music. The treats of his concert include vi- olin interpretations of rock songs and lm music. Which repertoire have you chosen for the Belgrade audience? “I will play my own compositions, as well as Bach and Tchaikovsky, but also modern songs by groups Led Zeppelin and Guns N’ Roses, Jimi Hen- drix, Bjork et al. We won’t have local guest performers in Belgrade, unfortu- nately, because we only arrive in your capital a day before the concert. There are many Serbian musicians who I rate highly and I hope that we’ll perform together some other time.” To what extent is your creativity inuenced by contact with many styles of world music? “When I travel with collaborating musicians, we are inspired by the mu-
sic and culture of the country where we’re making guest appearances, so I sometimes include those lo- cal notes in my repertoire. I’m lucky that I travel a lot and meet various creative people, musicians, musi- cal styles and cultures, because they are an impor- tant part of my creativity.” From whom did you inherit your musical gene? “My father was a violinist, and my love for that instrument stemmed from him. I’ve played the violin since I was a baby, at least that’s how it seems to me. It was my rst toy. That’s why I’ve always only been interested in being a violinist.” Which violin do you play? “My favourite violin has been with me for 25 years. It was made by famous violin maestro Domenico Mon- tagnana in Venice in the early 18 th century. He learned his craft from the age of 15. I preserve many violins, though not all of them are top quality. I play them depending on the type of concert I’m performing, for example, I only play certain ones at acoustic con- certs or those with electric instruments.” What are you like o stage? “I’m shy, quiet and withdrawn; I don’t feel like a star in my everyday life. On stage I become an ex- trovert, a public gure who’s driven by the audience and dedicated to it.” Do you have your favourites among composers

Imate li favorite među kompozitorima i muzičarima? – Bah, Majls Dejvis, Hendriks... i mnogi dru- gi kompozitori različitih epoha i stilova su mi omiljeni. A među violinistima? – Nikolo Paganini. Kako najradije upoznajete nova mesta?
and musicians? “Bach, Miles Davis, Hendrix... and many other composers of various ep- ochs and styles are among my favourites.” And among violinists? “Niccolò Paganini.” How do you prefer to familiarise yourself with a new place? The rst time I arrive in some place, I head out for a walk to feel the pulse of new streets, passersby, the way they live. I like to get lost in unfamiliar streets.” What do you like when it comes to Serbian musical heritage? “I’m a big fan of Serbian traditional music, which is very powerful, rhyth- mic. You can sometimes hear Serbian and Balkan sounds in my music.” What do you recall about your rst visit to Belgrade? “I was in Belgrade long ago and it was then that I rst played in front of a Belgrade audience. I remember that excellent performance with Serbi- an musicians, as well as the hospitable city. I have maintained my contacts with wonderful colleagues from Serbia, some of whom are my friends. I’m very much looking forward to meeting them again and staying in your me- tropolis, with its rich culture and history.” How would you describe yourself to someone to whom you’re pre- senting yourself for the rst time? “As Paganini in the attire of Jimi Hendrix.”
