There aren’t many things more beautiful in the world than the polar light show, Aurora Borealis. According to sci- ence, the Northern Lights, as they are known, are due to collisions between electrons and atoms in the upper layers of the atmosphere. The average visitor, like me, says that the Aurora is magical, and that there is no other explana- tion. Plan your trip between September and April to be sure not to miss out on this phenomenon.

8 TATE MENJAJU PELENE DADS CHANGE NAPPIES

Icelanders are satisfied with the position of women in so- ciety, but say that it can always be better. Fathers largely re- main at home with children and Iceland voted for its first ev- er female president back in 1980. By law, companies must pay both sexes an equal salary for the same job. Specifically, when women realised that they were being paid 14 per cent less than their male counterparts, they simply started working 14 per cent less and leaving early!

10 SUŽIVOT SA VILENJACIMA COEXISTING WITH ELVES

9 ZEMLJA NEZALAZEĆEG SUNCA LAND OF THE UNSETTING SUN

The best part of my visit to Iceland was actually taken up by conversations in which completely sober Icelanders in- formed me that they have neighbours – elves. Research con- firms that as many as 62 per cent of Icelanders still believe that these beings exist, and as such construction plans can be changed in order not to disturb them.

If you miss out on the Aurora, the con- solation prize is white nights and daytime that lasts almost 24 hours! Icelanders claim that they sleep without problem even with- out shutters, while tourists are mostly busy photographing the midnight sun.
