venčanju 1191. godine i navodno izja- vio: „Vino kraljeva i kralj među vi- nima!“ Iako su meštani to vino od pamtiveka zvali nama , današnji na- ziv duguje templarskim vitezovima iz reda Svetog Jovana, koji su kupili ostrvo od Ričarda i na jednom ima- nju koje su nazvali La Grande Com- manderie preuzeli proizvodnju. Ko- mandarija sadrži sve sastojke Kipra: med, trave, vanilu, začine i sušeno voće. Ono je poput prozora u kipar- sku dušu, kažu lokalni enolozi. Zato neka vam zaškripi halumi pod zubi- ma i vino sklizne sve do same kipar- ske suštine.

ZA ROMANTIKE AFRODITA I KLEOPATRA

Kipar ima divan nadimak. Zo- vu ga Ostrvo ljubavi. Najpre zbog toga što je prema mitologiji rodno mesto najlepše grčke boginje Afro- dite. Na plaži kod impresivnog ka- menja između Limasola i Pafosa, tamo gde se može stići samo auto- mobilom ili peške, iz morske pene rođena je boginja ljubavi, a tu pe- nu i danas možete videti tamo gde se nemirno more rasprskava o ste- ne. Prohladna, divlja i duboka već posle samo pola metra, voda menja boju u zavisnosti od doba dana. Le- genda kaže da ćete, ako preplivate tri puta oko Afroditine stene, u na- rednoj godini stati pred matičara. Pa ako vam je do braka, probajte, ne može da škodi! Ipak, Afrodita nije jedini razlog što Kipar zovu ostrvom ljubavi. Još jedan mit kaže da ga je Marko Anto- nije poklonio svojoj obožavanoj Kle- opatri, a da je ova egipatska lepoti- ca bilje sa ostrva koristila da pravi opojne parfeme.

ZA HEDONISTE HALUMI I KOMANDARIJA Znate onaj divni sir što kad je svež, škripi pod zubima, a kad se isprži ili baci na gri, rasteže se i topi u ustima? Da, Kipar je dom halumija, sira koji se pravi od kozjeg mleka i kojem je Evropska unija dodelila laskavu etike- tu – halumi je halumi samo ako je sa Kipra. Služi se svuda na ostrvu, čak i u fast fud restoranima, a ide uz salatu, hleb, maslinovo ulje, ali i sa slatkom marmeladom. Apsolutna gurmanska avantura, koju ne treba propustiti. Osim toga, za kiparsko desertno vino kažu da je najstarije na svetu. Sa izuzetno povoljnim položajem, per- fektnim zemljištem i velikim brojem sunčanih dana, Kipar je idealno me- sto za uzgoj vinove loze. A tu, u se- lu Erimi, nalazio se pre 4.500 godi- na veliki vinski centar u kojem se tada pravilo slatko crveno vino na- ma , koje su pominjali Hesiod, Homer i Plinije Stariji. Ipak, sudbinu ovog vina najviše je odredila legenda po kojoj je engleski kralj Ričard Lavlje Srce, osvojivši Kipar u Trećem kr- staškom pohodu, tu, u gradu Lima- solu, probao to vino na sopstvenom

FOR HEDONISTS HALOUMI AND COMMANDARIA

You know that wonderful cheese that creaks under your teeth when fresh, and which stretches when fried or grilled, melt- ing in the mouth? Yes, Cyprus is the home of haloumi, a cheese made from goat’s milk, which the European Union grant- ed a flamboyant label - haloumi is only haloumi if it is from Cyprus. It is served everywhere on the island, even in fast food, and goes well with salad, bread and olive oil, but also with sweet marmalade. This is an absolute gourmet adventure that you shouldn’t miss. Apart from that, Cyprus’s dessert wine is said to be the oldest in the world. With an exceptionally favourable geographical position, perfect land and a large number of sunny days, Cyprus is an ideal place for growing grapevines. And there, in the vil- lage of Erimi, a great wine centre was locat- ed 4,500 years ago, where they made Nama, the sweet red wine, which was mentioned by Hesiod, Homer and Pliny the Elder in their notes from antiquity. Nevertheless, the destiny of this wine was determined by the legend of King Richard the Lionheart of England, who after conquering Cyprus in the Third Crusade, tried this wine at his own wedding in Limassol in 1191 and al- legedly declared it: the wine of kings and the king of wines! Though locals always called this wine Nama, today’s name was devised by the Knights Templar of the Or- der of Saint John, who bought the island from Richard and took over the production on an estate that they named La Grande Commandarie. Commandaria contains all elements of Cyprus: honey, grass, vanilla, spices and dried fruit. According to local oenologists, it is like a window into the soul of Cyprus. So let the haloumi creak under your teeth, and the wine slide down to the very essence of Cyprus.

FOR ROMANTICS APHRODITE AND CLEOPATRA

Cyprus has a wonderful nickname. It is known as the Island of Love. That’s primarily because, according to myth, it is the birthplace of the most beautiful Greek goddess, Aphrodite. There on the beach beside the impressive rocks be- tween Limassol and Paphos, which you can reach only by car or on foot, the god- dess of love was born from the sea foam, and you can see that foam today, where the restless sea sprays around the rocks. Chilled, wild and deep after only half a metre, the water changes colour depend- ing on the time of day. And legend has it that if you swim three times around Aphrodite’s Rock, you will be married within the following year. Try it if you are keen to marry – it can’t hurt! Aphrodite, however, isn’t the only reason why Cyprus is called the island of love. According to another myth, Marko Antony gifted the island to his beloved Cleopatra, and this Egyptian beauty used herbs from the island to make her intoxi- cating perfumes.
