R oskilde is a small Danish town and the country’s former medieval cap- ital, nestled in a green environment in the typical Scandinavian way. Just thirty kilometres west of Copenhagen, this town of around 50,000 inhabitants is on the tourist map today for three good reasons. It is home to a cathedral that is the oldest Gothic church in northern Europe, in which there is a crypt of the Danish royal family con- taining the mortal remains of as many as 39 Danish monarchs. For all lovers of the Vikings and their culture, Roskilde is the right place to visit, because it contains a museum of Vi- king ships or, more precisely, what remains of them after a thousand years. However, you

can still sample part of that history here and learn to tie knots, separate keels for ships or, if you are adventurous, feel what it was really like to voyage on some sailing boat. Bear in mind that you will receive a wooden oar to row by hand and you’ll end up a lit- tle sweaty, but also that you certainly won’t emerge from this Viking undertaking dry! Finally, during the last week of June Roskilde becomes the most entertaining city in the world, visited annually, thanks to its music festival, by more than 130,000 people. First organised in 1971, as one of the few festivals in this part of Europe, it quickly gained cult status. It is also called the Euro- pean festival with a heart, because it is or- ganised by volunteers and all revenue gen-
erated by the festival is donated to charitable organisations.Young musicians are invited to perform at the festival, but also mega stars like The Rolling Stones or Paul McCartney. Roskilde is also a city filled with histori- cal monuments: nearby is the famous Lejre experimental centre, the Land of Legends, with an open-air reconstructed prehistoric and historical environment, as well as a signif- icant number of exceptional museums. The city is known for its various research centres, specialising in the development of sustain- able energy, colleges, but also its famous hospital, dating back to the mid-19 th cen- tury, which is the world’s leading institute for the research of numerous areas in the field of medicine.
