I n the mountainous Zlatibor region, women have always pro- cessed wool and knitted blankets, clothing and warm socks for their loved ones. They joined forces several decades ago to produce tens of thousands of unique sweaters, jackets, coats and caps for the world fashion market, which were worn with de- light at fashion shows and presented in the window displays of exclusive boutiques around the world. In honour of these anon- ymous bearded women about whom global fashion magazines wrote, the Museum of Knitters was established in Sirogojno. In addition to numerous awards, it preserves letters and photo- graphs of Jovanka Broz, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan and other famous personalities who had at least one item from the collec- tion of Zlatibor’s knitters.
