to tradition, but also to the rhythms of her own generation
U nder the auspices of the 20 th con- secutive Guitar Art Festival, Car- minha will present, alongside old hits, the songs from her cur- rent fth album, Maria, which critics have dubbed her most personal album to date. Her career path to date has revealed her to be an artist who never forgets her ori- gins, who carries within her the language of several centuries, but who is also con- temporary, looking to the world and the future. She is coming to Belgrade for the rst time... - I’ve never been to Serbia and am very excited that I will be part of this festi- val and will have the opportunity to pres- ent my fado. You have been dubbed “the new queen of fado music”. Is that a heavy burden for you? - My responsibility is to the fado gen- re. I have the honour and privilege of rep- resenting a kind of music and a language, so it’s what I do, respecting my roots and at the same time being myself and doing what my heart says, in my own genera- tion, with my own style. So, I don’t know if I’m the new queen of fado, there are no queens. Fado is bigger than all the queens and all the Fado singers. It is important to take care of and preserve fado. Was your professional journey actu- ally predetermined by your mother, who was herself a famous singer? - My mother was a singer, but she was committed to her family with four children. I was never pushed to become a singer. My parents gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do. I went to university and got a marketing degree. And after that I went on a one-year world tour to get to know myself, with no cellphones or oth- er communications, at the age of just 21. When I came back, I decided to be a sing- er, a decision I made by myself and my parents were very supportive. Since my mother was a singer, my brothers and I al- ready knew a lot about fado, but nobody was forced to follow this path.
