A band that nurtures roots reggae in its original style, dub rhythms in combination with jazz and el- ements of wind instruments is irieFM. This musical powerhouse signed a contract back in 2008 with production house Blue House Frog, alongside the likes of Sade, Richard Bona and John McLaugh- lin. Four years later, irieFM won the award for the Best European Reggae Band, with which the doors to Europe’s biggest festi- vals ocially opened. The band matured, its music acquired soul, funk, electro-pop and disco sensibilities, and a frontman. Vukašin Marković went from the character of Beban in the TV series ‘Family Treasure’ to become a serious artist. He worked as a graphic designer, played trombone in en- sembles Eyesburn and Smoke’n’Soul, and now he leads irieFM and promotes the al- bum ‘Putevi’ (Roads). “I spent a lot of time listening to music, both foreign and domestic. My DJ back then was my mother, who seemed to en- joy watching me become increasingly in- terested in music in every sense. Perhaps I’m slightly sorry that I didn’t take any in- strument in my hands during those days. Everything would be much easier now,”re- calls Marković. He has developed as an author in several stages. From a lover of music, to his dis- covery of reggae, via his rst musical ex- periences in the group Eyesburn, all the way to irieFM. “The period during which irieFM was a group with the ambition to become a glob- al reggae band lasted a long time and was terribly thorny and slow, but fruitful. We became precisely that, enjoying signi- cant experiences at a global level. After everything, we went from there with the idea of nevertheless making something much more personal, free from genres, not to say that we returned to the lab to con- duct a lot more work.”
Eight years after the release of their rst edition, in front of us is a refreshed, up- dated version of irieFM, while the album is symbolically entitled ‘Roads’... “The album was named after the song and its importance to us. This is perhaps our most mature song to date. It is particular- ly dear to me because it comes from the classic pop form, but succeeds in carry- ing the desired atmosphere. It relates to all those who nd themselves in the story carried by the song, and it refers to some issues that are sidelined by daily life and problems that make us alive.” The album is lled with symbolism, ad- dresses various aspects of love, emotion- al and life journeys that a person travers- es in search of a better version of self. It is precisely in diversity that our interlocu- tor nds inspiration, and it is within touch- ing distance. “Railway stations, airports - I’ve always been attracted to such places, and the dierent cultures that are subtly or explicitly seen in those places. Such places clearly show us that, although there are dierent ways of handling some of the basic things that comprise life, the essence of us all remains the same. Dierences are good when in “collision” they produce something new that inspires, encourages and compels one to consider some new way of looking at the same phenomenon. Apart from the name of the album and the (in)direct signicance evoked by the songs, such as the current single‘What pulses your body’, it also includes elements that are a reection of Vukašin’s experience of some other places. “I conquer new places by spending suf- cient time there, so much that I feel as though I’m on my own territory. I accept that place, live life with it, learn a little about people’s habits, adjust my own habits. The scent of a place, that which is felt in the air, is what I feel rst.
