GREEN ISLAND OF THE ENDLESS PLAINS OF PANNONIA This park has been a protected area for over half a centu- ry and represents Serbia’s oldest national park. Famous for its mild slopes, centuries-old forests, vineyards and geological treasures, this national park covers the higher climbs of the Fruška Gora mountain massif, the dominant highland area of Vojvodina, which rises like a green island along the southern border of the Pannonian Plain, immediately beside the bank of the Danube. Here you will find a rich and diverse living world, because this former island of the Pannonian Sea has remained an optimal habitat for many species. Forests cover 90 per cent of the park area, with linden, oak and beech trees dominating. The park is also rich in plantlife and is home to around 1,500 species, over 40 of which have the status of na- tural rarities in Serbia, while as many as 18 of its 30 types of orchid have international significance. Fruška Gora also provi- des a home for protected species of insects, amphibians and reptiles, as well as around 211 species of bird. You are awaited here by many cultural monuments, while its 16 Orthodox mo- nasteries stand out in terms of their beauty. All relevant contacts for visits can be found at www.npfru- skagora.co.rs.
