will be, the first indicators of who could enter the race for an Oscar came after the recent Gotham Independent Film Awards, which were held for the 30 th time on 11 th January. The top candidates for the Best Film category, based on the work of magazines Variety and IndiWire, and in accordance with the nominations at Gotham, in- clude independent modern western drama Nomadland with Frances McDormand, who has also been mentioned among others as a possible candidate for the best female role, David Fincher’s Netflix film Mank, about the gold- en era of Hollywood and the behind-the-scenes drama of the cult classic Citizen Kane, the historical drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, about clashes between police and protesters in 1968 over the U.S. government’s decision to enlist a large number of young men to fight in the Viet- nam War, and Minari, a Korean-American drama about a Korean family who comes to America with the desire to realise the famous “American dream”.
Films that received positive reviews from critics, including Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, Soul, Palm Springs and First Cow, are not considered as being top candidates, but critic Chris Evangelista stated for IndiWire that he would not be surprised to see some of these films included in the best film category. The 2020 Oscars were held on 10 th February, while this year they’ve been scheduled for 25 th April. Two months remain until nominations are announced, and films that will be released during February and March could also be part of the ceremony. And just as the whole of 2020 was uncertain, so the Oscars on 25 th April 2021 will be uncertain. Nothing is certain yet, and a last min- ute surprise could happen. Like all other arts, the art of film is also at a turning point. Still, one thing that’s for certain is that there will always be good films, even if they don’t come from major Hollywood studios.
