T he Cerak Vinogradi [Vineyards] settlement (Cerak 1 and 2) is located in the Belgrade Municipality of Čukarica, on the hills of Šu- madija, in close proximity to Košutnjak and not far from the Lipovica Forest, where res- idents can enjoy views of Avala and the slopes of Kos- maj from their windows. At a distance of around 10 km from the city centre, it was the terrain's morphology and the pleasant climate which determined that the site of the ancient Cer For- est would provide the location for the first eco-friendly

residential settlement in Belgrade. It was constructed on the basis of the design project of married cou- ple professors Darko and Mileni- ja Marušić and architect Nedel- jko Borovnica, in the period from 1976 to 1986. It was at the initi- ative of the Institute for the Pro- tection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade that the Gov- ernment of the Republic of Serbia declared the Cerak Vinogradi set- tlement as a cultural monument, thus making it Europe’s third ur- ban neighbourhood of contem- porary architecture to hold such a status. The construction of housing estates in the then Yugoslavia was primarily the task of the supreme state leadership, on the basis of regulations governing social wel- fare policy. The aim of the author was to build a modern and func- tional settlement that would im- prove the standard of multifami- ly housing in settlements located beyond the city's narrower urban area. The terrain's natural features shaped the urbanisation concept, through the specific organising of space, the layout of buildings and the network of streets. This settlement comprises four neighbourhoods with es- sential facilities, as well as a cen- tral park that connects them to form an integral unit.
