emancipatory possibilities of the nation and national idea are,” says Grubanov. If you feel some discomfort while looking at the photos of the work“The Unification of Dead Nations”you’ll know that, as an observer and an audience member, you’re on the right path. - Art must leave a trace, otherwise it isn’t art if it doesn’t antagonise or pro- voke. Art that does not awaken any- thing in the audience, in the commu- nity, in the aether or in the air around itself is not potent art. Art that pro- vokes controversy and compels peo- ple to think about it, to express them- selves about it, to praise or condemn it, is art in which something happens. Such art has created new possibilities, new discourse, new channels of percep- tion, feeling and consideration. Grubanov notes that we are liv- ing in a general cacophony and colour- fulness, and that the renowned Octo- ber Salon affirms Belgrade as a vibrant hub of culture. - It’s not burning to get the most intense possible impulse of information and the broadest range of possibilities, and that’s why this kind of exhibition makes sense for this environment. There are other cities in the area that are in- teresting culturally, historically and ar- chitecturally, but they don’t have that impulse that Belgrade possesses. Bel- grade as a place of culture has some energy of its own and a pronounced cultural sensibility. This artist, who lives and works in Pančevo, travels frequently because he exhibits in the world’s largest galler- ies. This view of Belgrade, from the sky, from a plane, gives him yet another in- sight into why our city is so special and extravagant. - I always find the confluence and the Danube distinctive. The Danube in Belgrade is powerful, as is Great War Island. These natural toponyms even overcome the silhouette of the city and what is happening in it. In Bel- grade there is an exchange of ener- gy and intensity, a meeting of these two rivers, the meeting of the pen- insula and the continent, one very dynamic boundary of history and civilisation. There are some specific energies there that transmit their ef- fects to both the city and the peo- ple. Belgrade is simultaneously both big and small, has the characteristics, of a metropolis and is also like a vil- lage; a man quickly settles here, so it’s no surprise that the whole region adores this city, says Grubanov.

THE MARVELLOUS CACOPHONY

For the first time in the October Salon, Anselm Kiefer, one of the most significant artists of the second half of the 20 th centu- ry, will exhibit. Within the exhibition one can also find the works of Cindy Sherman, for whom many say that,“she is not a photogra- pher, but an artist that uses photography.” Representatives of European and Serbian art from the second half of the 20 th century to the present day include the most eminent domestic artists -- Vladimir Veličković and Dušan Otašević, who will also be again pre- sented at the October Salon after a break of a couple of decades. One of the stars of this year’s October Salon is Ian Cheng, a repre- sentative of the artists of the younger gener- ation from America, who is leading the field of digital arts by reflecting the media he us- es as well as through the specificity of his ar- tistic practise.
