STATUE OF LIBERTY In order to visit the symbol not just of New York, but of America as a whole, you will have to leave Manhattan and climb 354 steps. The lady representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, was created in 1886, formed by 300 pieces of copper. A gift from France, Lady Liberty carries a torch and a plaque marking the date of 4 th July 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed. The statue has long since lost its original copper colour and turned green due to oxidisation. FLUSHING MEADOWS September is the perfect time to visit New York, particularly so if you’re a lover of tennis. The last of the four major Grand Slam tournaments of the year is played every September at the com- plex located within Flushing Meadows Park in Queens. Even if tennis doesn’t interest you, this largest park in Queens (and fourth largest in New York) is worth visiting. Apart from the ten- nis complex, green areas, playgrounds and fields for all types of sports, it also houses the Queens Museum, the New York Hall of Science, a zoo and even the Mets’ Citi Field Stadium. STATEN ISLAND FERRY As an alternative to the expensive and overcrowded boat that car- ries tourists around the Statue of Liberty, hop onto a free ferry to Staten Island, which is part of New York’s regular city transport network and operates 24/7. You will also see the Statue of Lib- erty and enjoy a phenomenal view of Manhattan. The ferry is al- ways clean, arrives on time and mostly isn’t crowded. Board at the Whitehall Terminal on Manhattan and enjoy the twenty-five-min- ute ride to the St George Terminal. CONEY ISLAND Once an island, but today a peninsula connected to the mainland, Coney is a residential area of Brooklyn. Coney beach is packed dur- ing summer weekends, with both tourists and locals, and generally lovers of amusement parks. Coney Island has always had a tradition of amusement parks. Sea Lion Park opened in 1895 and was then among the world’s most famous amusement parks. Today you will find roller coasters, waltzers, carousels, the famous Cyclone that opened in 1927 and still works today, with thousands of lights and bulbs. When you’re done with the rides, head for a hot dog at Na- than’s, because legend has it that it was precisely on Coney Island the first ever hot dog was served in a bread bun. BUSHWICK STREET ART Apart from all the well-known museums and galleries of New York, it’s also worth visit something completely different – the Bushwick Street Art Gallery. Bushwick, once a dangerous neighbourhood of Brook- lyn, is today an attractive location visited by tourists from all around the world, thanks to the unique graffiti of various street artists. It all started when Bushwick-born Joe Ficalora lost his parents. His father was murdered in front of the entrance to the subway station, then

Osim svih dobro poznatih muzeja i galerija u Njujorku, vre- di posetiti i nešto sasvim drugačije – Bušvik strit art galeriju.

his mother later died of a tumour. In order to find a reason to continue living, Joe began beautifying his neighbour-

hood, and the result of that work is the Bushwick Collective. Dozens of artists have left hundreds of vari- ous works, so you can spend hours enjoying the extraordinary (and free) art.
