Applause
A t a height of 73 metres and with 23 floors, the Ringturm is the tallest building in the histor- ic and tourism centre of Vien- na, and this summer it is “dressed” in the work of the painter Mihael Milunović. This is the first time that this Viennese land- mark has been dressed in the work of a Serbian artist, and Mihael’s“Vision”adorns it just for this jubilee – the tenth anniver- sary of the building’s“wrapping”.The artis- tic work measuring 4,000 square metres represents a cultural dialogue between Austria and Serbia. A red train climbing a blue mountain represents continuity and endurance, while the funicular is a means that helps us to become self-aware. The antenna at the top of the mountain sym- bolises the readiness to share positive en- ergy with others. Milunović (50) was born in Belgrade. For him art was a game and a way of pre- senting himself to the world. He was in- fluenced significantly by the works of Titian, Velázquez and De Chirico. He com-
pleted his Bachelor and Master’s Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, be- fore completing his specialist studies at the National Academy of Fine Arts (École na- tionale supérieure des Beaux-Arts) in Paris, where, alongside Vladimir Veličković, his professors also included Marina Abramović and Tony Brown. He was a laureate of the Renoir Foundation and at one point lived and worked in Renoir’s studio. He held his first solo exhibition at the FLU Gallery in 1991, as a fourth-year student of paint- ing, which at that time was an extraordi- narily brave and bold move. His gesture led many other students to start exhib- iting before completing their studies, to the obvious disapproval of several then professors of the Academy of Fine Arts. Violence, repression, manipulation – unpleasant realities of modern life are pre- sented in Milunović’s attractive works. His work encompasses a wide range of disci- plines, from painting, drawing and pho- tography, to large sculptures and installa- tions. Here we present some of his works.
