AMSTERDAM AMSTERDAM

Leiden is a city located just a fif- teen-minute train ride from Amsterdam to the south, surrounded by greenhouses of tulips, and almost representing a small and quieter version of the Dutch Venice. As the seat of the oldest Dutch university, founded in 1575, it is awash with academ- ics. The bicycle is, of course, the mandato- ry means of transport, but you can also tour Leiden by boats, on which passengers must often duck to pass under the low bridg- es that crisscross the entire city. The conflu- ence of two rivers, the Old and New Rhine, represents a special attraction on these boat tours. Nearby is the historic building of the city assembly, while along the water are cafés with gardens on barges. Alongside streets paved with typical un- even red tiles are the colourful façades of narrow houses, which, although having been built recently, adhere to the unique image of the Netherlands. Other histori- cal structures aren’t lacking either, primar- ily the Burcht, a citadel raised on the city’s only elevated area, offering a fantastic view of the whole city, but also the Gothic cathe- dral - Hooglandse Kerk. It is also impossible to avoid the recognisable symbol of Leid- en, the Old Windmill, which should certain- ly be visited. Leiden is known as a city that’s financially much more accessible than Am- sterdam, and it is also located in an idyllic position for those who want to travel along the coast. It is connected by rail to the cap- ital city, Schiphol Airport, The Hague and Rotterdam. TRY DUTCH PANCAKES No one can remain immune to huge Dutch pancakes, especially because they make a hearty meal when served with salmon fil- lets, but they can also be eaten sweet with syrup, spiced with cinnamon and fruit. In restaurants you will pay around 16 euros for this delicacy. DON’T MISS THE MARKETS On Wednesdays and Saturdays the squeres of Botermarkt, Vismarkt, Aalmarkt and New Rhine are adorned with colourful stalls. On these market days you can buy sea fish, flowers and cheese. FESTIVAL IN HONOUR OF VICTORY This celebration of victory over the Spanish (1573-1574) following the Siege of Leiden is marked in the city to this day. The date set aside for this is 3 rd October, with a parade and fireworks. NOORDWIJK BY THE SEA Don’t miss the sandy beach at Noordwijk , a small town near Leiden. This long, wide sandy beach is a pleasure for relaxing, but also a challenge for surfers.
