Državni moto njegovih stanovnika jeste da, uz sve razlike koje ih spajaju, ostanu baš takvi kakvi jesu Thanks to its position at a cultural crossroads, this country brings together different cultures and languages, thereby representing a fusion of the old and new. Their national motto is actually that, alongside all the differences that connect them, they remain exactly what they are

Zahvaljujući svom položaju, na raskršću, spaja razli- čite kulture i jezike, te predstavlja me- šavinu starog i novog. Mnogi stanovni- ci potiču iz susednih zemalja, a gotovo trećina stanovništva ima strani pasoš. Govore francuski, luksemburški i ne- mački. Simbol glavnog grada Luksem- burga predstavlja neogotička katedrala F or Luxembourg it can be said - there isn’t neither a smaller country, nor greater things for which it is known! This is Europe’s richest country and the world’s second richest in terms of per capita GDP. They are mainly in banking, while they also produce steel and coal, so it’s no wonder. Luxembourg, along with Belgium and the Netherlands, forms the Benelux coun- tries and is one of the most important cen- tres of the European Union, the headquar- ters of the European Investment Bank and the European Court of Justice. Thanks to its position at a cultural crossroads, it brings together different cultures and languages, thereby representing a fusion of the old and new. A large number of residents have their origins in neighbouring countries, while al- most a third of the population has a foreign passport. They speak French, Luxembour- gish and German.

The symbol of the capital city of Lux- embourg is represented by the Catholic, neo-gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, built in the 17 th century and recognisable by its tall tapered tower. It can also serve tourists as a starting point for any tour, because the city’s top attractions lie in its immediate vicinity. Not far from the cathedral is the Gëlle Fra, the fig- ure of a woman covered in gold, which rep- resents the symbol of freedom, as demon- strated by the wreath she holds in her hand. It is in fact a war memorial built in remem- brance of WWII combatants. Luxembourg is a city of luxurious restau- rants, where international cuisine is very much represented and where, given its size and population, there are more establishments with Michelin stars than anywhere else. Try smoked pork in a sauce, specialities from riv- er fish and Kachkéis, a type of cooked cheese, and trying the local dessert boudin noir (black pudding) is a must.

THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS VILLAGE Just 25km from the capital city is Schen- gen. This village on the three-way bor- der between Germany, France and Lux- embourg will forever be remembered as the place where Europe was united. Spe- cifically, it was on 14 th June 1985 that five European countries co-signed an agree- ment that began the process of abol- ishing mutual border controls. The five countries that signed the agreement aboard the MS Princesse Marie-Astrid were Belgium, Luxembourg, the Neth- erlands, Germany and France, while the signing took place beside the Luxem- bourg village of Schengen, so this little place gave its name to one of the most famous European documents and thus became “the world’s most famous vil- lage”. Since then the European Union has expanded significantly, but the museum, monument, flags, metal tiles and pieces of the Berlin Wall, as symbols of the dem- olition of borders, have remained.
