THE ACROPOLIS OF ATHENS AND THE PARTHENON The Acropolis is the most emblematic site of Athens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site that's located on a hill in the capital is one of Greece's most visited ancient sites. It’s also the city's main tourist attraction. At its top you will find the Parthenon, the Acropolis's most famous monument. Like most of the site, it was commissioned by Pericles and built during the 5 th century B.C. This temple, which is dedicated to the Goddess Athena, is made entirely of marble and weighs about 20,000 tons!
MONASTIRAKI AND PLAKA NEIGHBOURHOOD Monastiraki Square, with its Byzantine Church, is the heart of this lively and cosmopolitan neighbourhood. You’ll enjoy strolling through its narrow alleys with their many small shops of all kind. The atmosphere feels a bit like the souks in Arabic countries! Whether shopping for souvenirs, clothes, shoes or jewellery, you’ll no doubt find everything you need. The famous Monastiraki Flea Market is also held on Avissinya Square each Sunday. Another place you should visit in Athens is the Pláka neighbourhood. This oldest district in Athens is often nicknamed “the neighbourhood of the Gods”, due to its location in the foothills of the Acropolis. Despite being a very busy area that's extremely popular among tourists, Pláka has managed to preserve its picturesque charm, with narrow alleys and pretty houses. During your tour you'll also enjoy Byzantine structures and neo-classical houses.
THE ANCIENT AGORA The Agora was the main square of ancient Athens. It was considered the cultural, political, commercial and social centre of the city. The site is mostly in ruins today, but is still worth a visit, especially for The Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best preserved Doric temples in Greece. You’ll also find a museum displaying objects discovered at the site.
