B ulgaria’s Black Sea coastline ex- tends along an impressive 400 kilometres and boasts some of Europe’s most beautiful sandy beaches. Several forested mountain ranges spread across this beautiful country from east to west, rising to heights exceeding 2,000 metres and sporting thick snow cov- er until the end of spring. There’s some- thing here for everybody... The longest is Stara Planina (aka the Balkan Mountain), which cuts through the entire country from west to east. In the south sprawl three other large mountain ranges, Rila, Pirin and Rhodope, while a doz- en smaller mountain massifs spread along the entire length of the western border. Be- tween the mountains are fertile plains and valleys, which have a warm, sunny climate, and which have earned Bulgaria a repu- tation as “the garden of Eastern Europe”. The ski resorts of Borovets and Ban- sko, located on Rila and Pirin mountains in the Rhodopes massif, are a real paradise for skiers and those who like spending their holidays in snow and temperatures well below zero. Bansko is an excellent alter- native to the Alps, and the combination of the beauty of Pirin National Park and the diversity of picturesque landscapes, with new luxury hotels and a modern system of ski slopes and lifts, has turned this small town into Eastern Europe’s most prestig- ious ski resort.

BOROVEC FROM HUNTING RESERVE FOR BULGARIAN EMPERORS TO MODERN SKI CENTRE Despite being a hunting reserve for Bulgarian emperors 150 years ago, Borovets is today a modern ski centre that has twice hosted the Alpine Ski World Cup. Apart from excellent ski lanes, gondola lifts and hotels, it is also known for traditional ‘mehani’ taverns where guests drink well and eat even better. The Pamporovo ski resort is surrounded by a beautiful pine forest that gives an idyllic look to the landscape, which is why this ski centre is popular with both skiers and boarders, as well as tourists seeking a peaceful, family holiday.
