FROM ALBRECHT DÜRER TO PAUL KLEE Strolling through artistic landscapes Vienna’s Albertina Museum has prepared an exhibition entitled “Landscapes. From Albrecht Dürer to Paul Klee”, which will be on display from 5 th March to 30 th May 2021
If you find yourself in Vienna in March, don’t miss out on a visit to the Albertina Museum, where you can set out on an unusual stroll through landscape pictures covering a period of five centuries. The presented works encompass the beginnings of auton- omous landscape paintings, primarily through Albrecht Dürer, then works by Brueghel, Rembrandt, the Dutch Golden Age etc. Everything is there – from urban panoramas during the age of the Renaissance to late-Baroque vedute, from utopian depictions of idyllic landscapes to realistic paint- ings of nature during the time of in- dustrialisation, from the sublime and sophisticated works of Caspar Da- vid Friedrich to Alfred Kubin’s vi- sions of horror and dystopia, all the way to the playful nature of child- hood dreams with Paul Klee. Com-
pleting the exhibition are key works of romantic landscapes and Austri- an watercolours from the 19 th cen- tury, such as Jakob Alt’s famed Vi- ennese cityscape. The majority of the featured works were acquired by Duke Al- bert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), founder of the museum’s collection. He took a special interest in large-for- mat, painting-like landscape draw- ings of the late 18 th and early 19 th centuries. He collected landscapes by Adrian Zingg and his pupils, be- cause of their artistic qualities, but also because of feelings of nostalgia for his old homeland of Saxony. It was particularly during the final years of his life that Duke Albert concentrat- ed on collecting landscape paintings, an extraordinary selection of which will be presented in this exhibition.
