LAKE GENEVA The second largest lake in Central Europe, Switzerland shares a smaller part of this body of water with France. A whopping 73 kilometres long and 14 km wide, it is here that the River Rhône flows through Lake Geneva on its route to the Mediterranean Sea. Both locals and tourists use the lake for bathing during hot summer days, but also for enjoying water sports, pedalos and small boats. There are also many swans here that are tame and love to be fed. Nobody could blame you for wanting to head out and experience it, and the easiest way to do so is to catch a boat from the quay at Genève-Mt-Blanc. Boats embark from here to a host of places on the shores of the lake: you could keep it local on a “mouette”, shuttling to the other side of the city, or opt for a longer distance and take the three- hour cruise to Lausanne. This lake’s beauty has influenced the design of the city itself, with the promenade around the shore constructed back in the mid-19 th century. Surrounding the lake are tree-lined promenades with palatial townhouses or serene parks, such as Eaux-Vives, Jardin Anglais, Perle du Lac or Mon Repos.
