The day still hasn’t filled the interior of this masterpiece of medieval architecture with light, but the nuns are engrossed in reading psalms and other religious texts. The fres- coes have already danced with their vivid colours, while the nuns bow in turn in front of the icons of saints. They fall to their knees, touch the marble floor with their forehead, or bow as low as their years allow. In this way they show their respect and humility, as

well as awareness that we are all small in front of the divine. They then withdraw to their cells in the resi- dence, protected from the curiosity of newcomers by cultivating plantations. This sisterhood is isolated from what most peo- ple consider to be reality, so tourists can only guess what monastic daily life is really like. Testifying to how the monastery used to exist is the unique Gračanica Charter, written on the wall of the space (Deaconicon) to the right of the altar. King Milutin bequeathed to it many estates in a wide circle around Pristina, including Gračanica, whose gifts nourished and warmed the nuns. The Iconographer workshop from more recent times has been relocated to Gorioč Monastery. There isn’t even a monastic agricultural economy anymore, with the exception of one cow – the pet of mother Te- odora. The nuns, educated on paper, are all devoted to prayer and the study of the living saints.

And when they are present in the church, they look more like shadows, on the scenes from the walls of the temple. Some of them move in the greatest silence to remove the traces of the wilted petals of flower from vases placed next to the icons, in or- der for nothing to disturb the perfection of the monastery. Even tour guides whisper, interpreting the scenes in various languages. Gračanica is also preserved from oblivion by that huge, dramat- ic sky, but above all by its own beauty, transferred from Milutin’s dream of five clouds.
