RITAM GRADA RHYTHM OF THE TOWN
UŠĆE
CONFLUENCE
The building of Business Centre Ušće is locat- ed at the confluence of the rivers Sava and Dan- ube, with its green-tinted windows provid- ing views of both New Belgrade and the old city. Officially the tallest building in Belgrade - the last, 25 th , floor is at a height of 115m, while the height of the building itself, with its anten- na, is 141m. However, while citing the data on its height we cannot help but recall one of the most terrible periods of Serbia’s recent history. Constructed to be the headquarters of the Cen- tral Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, it originally had a height of 106 me- tres. It awaited NATO’s bombing as a business centre, but it was struck repeatedly by rockets and sustained catastrophic damage. When the conflict ended, reconstruction started and last- ed several years. It is now again a modern sky- scraper, with green-tinted glass that reflects both the old and new parts of the city, the riv- er and the sky – defiantly extended with two ex- tra floors.
