ALL THE BEAUTY OF NEW YORK The soul of Manhattan is up to the north An American federal holiday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. provides a good excuse to visit Harlem this January MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY IS AN AMER- ICAN federal holiday that commemorates the birth- day of the great Dr. King every year. Even though his birthday is on 15 th January, this holiday is observed on the third Monday of January, which will this year be the 18 th . King was the chief spokesperson for non-violent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which success- fully protested against racial discrimination present in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal hol- iday in King's honour began soon after he was assas- sinated in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in some states three years later, but only in all 50 for the first time in the year 2000. Dr. King is associated with the southern states of America, but he also visited Harlem many times, par- ticipating in monumental events and delivering histor- ic speeches from pulpits in Harlem, which had an in- delible impact on this neighbourhood, New York City as a whole and the entire world. Tour the neighbourhood and explore the histo- ry of Harlem, from its origins as a 17 th -century Dutch
