FROM SHOES FOR LIZARDS TO SHOES FOR PRINCESSES OD CIPELA ZA GUŠTERE DO CIPELA ZA PRINCEZE

Monolo’s creations are more than shoes; they are part of the pure passion and love of their creator, who turns women’s steps into art

Plamti i dalje.

I t all started when, as a boy, he used the wrapper of a Cadbury’s chocolate bar to make shoes for a lizard, and perhaps even earlier. Love flashed in- to existence back in 1970, when Diana Vreeland, then editor of Vogue, persuaded him to turn to creat- ing shoes. And the flames are still flying. He’s Manolo. Today, 43 years on, we can state freely that the secret of his success is in the fact that he knows how to say no. He knows and isn’t scared. Since opening his first retail outlet in London in 1973, Manolo Blah- nik has been creating unbelievably beautiful shoes. They give every woman almost magical powers of walking captivatingly on high heels He has a wide opus, ranging from dizzily high heels with laces, via lounge shoes in incredible col- ours, to flat models decorated with clasps like those on the shoes of pilgrims. Manolo doesn’t only tell us his own fashion story, but rather a much more pow- erful one, a life story. How important it is to remain consistent to yourself and to do what you believe in. Manolo is among the rare creators who has kept his company. And now, at the age of 74, he says he is happiest because he is free. He resisted trends and petty fads with great self-confidence. There is no place for platform shoes in his opus. He does not like them.“They’re ridiculous, I simply mourn for beautiful legs ruined by platforms!” He says of himself that he is old-fashioned. He goes to the factory and creates a model. He must feel
