a Jana Gela, čuvenog dan- skog arhitektu i urbanistu, moglo bi se reći da je dok- tor za gradove jer tačno zna
da uspostavi dijagnozu i prepiše te- rapiju svetskim metropolama izgu- bljenim u betonu i magli izduvnih gasova. U prethodnih 50 godina ve- ćina zemalja sveta ga je, pre ili kasni- je, pozvala da njihove gradove vrati ljudima i učini ih podnošljivijim za život. Njegove ideje danas su utkane u trgove Njujorka, ulice Moskve, kao i najveće gradove Australije. A sve to po uzoru na rodni Ko- penhagen, za koji nam Jan kaže da je najbolje mesto na svetu. Njegov grad nije namenjen ni zgradama, ni automobilima, namenjen je ljudima i njihovim potrebama. U Kopenha- genu se sneg najpre čisti iz pešačkih zona i sa biciklističkih staza, a tek onda s kolovoza. A Jan je u velikoj meri pomogao da se to desi. Nije za- to čudo što je u godini kada Kopen- hagen slavi 850 godina postojanja Jan Gel proglašen za jednog od de- set najvažnijih ljudi u istoriji grada. – To je velika čast i zaista sam presrećan. A još sam srećniji zbog činjenice da je Kopenhagen najlep- ši grad za život na celom svetu! Ni- J an Gehl, the famous Danish architect and urban design consultant, could be called a doctor for cities, because he knows how to establish a precise diagnosis and prescribe treatment for cities that have lost themselves in concrete and ex- haust fumes. Over the past 50 years, most of the world’s countries have invited him, soon- er or later, to return their cities to the peo- ple and make them more tolerable for life. His ideas are today woven into the squares of New York and the streets of Moscow, but also the largest cities in Australia. And he models all of this on his native Copenhagen, which Jan tells us is the best place in the world. His city is not intended for either buildings or cars; it is intended for peo- ple and their needs. In Copenhagen, snow is first cleared from pedestrian zones and bicy- cle lanes, and only then from roadways. And Jan provided great help in making that hap- pen. No wonder, then, that in the year cel- ebrating 850 years of Copenhagen’s exist- ence, Jan Gehl was proclaimed one of the ten most important people in the city’s history. - That’s a great honour and I’m really de- lighted.
