If you’ve read Graham Greene’s nov- el The Third Man or seen the film ad- aptation by Carol Reed, featuring the masterful Orson Welles, you certainly view Vienna’s famous Ferris Wheel from a slightly different perspective than mil- lions of other tourists. You can thus, of course, follow in the footsteps of the Third Man (a tour exists), with the Big Wheel just one of the stops, but for the culmination of your tour of Vienna you can still take a turn on this 120-year- old attraction, which is one of the larg- est symbols of the city and a protect- ed monument.
BELVEDERE
One of the world’s most beautiful baroque edifices, the Bel- vedere was built in the 18 th century at the behest of Austrian mil- itary leader Prince Eugene of Savoy. Apart from its beauty, the Belvedere is also known as a place where you can see one of the most famous paintings of all time – Klimt’s The Kiss. The Upper Belvedere boasts the world’s largest collection of Klimt paintings, and is the home to works by Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and French Impressionists. These are permanent exhibitions, while the Lower Belvedere, where Prince Eugene lived, hosts top-class visiting exhibitions.
