The pompous build- ing is the work of Italian architect Renzo Pi- ano. It includes six floors of spacious galleries, with four balconies from which you can enjoy views of the Hudson River and the West Village. The museum, which was founded in 1930 by the famous Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a

Impressive collections from modern and contemporary American art in- clude paintings, drawings and sculptures of numerous artists, such as Andy Warhol, Jas- per Johns, Georgia O’Keefe, Alexander Calder, Willem Kooning, Jeff Koons et al. One of the most popular museums in New York today, with a rich collection of 15,000 works, it is the main port of call and home for newly discovered artists and their installations. Open- ings are usually very well attended, and there are often international stars among the guests. And when you get tired of art, additional en- tertainment can be found in one of the restau- rants on the ground floor or on the terrace on the top floor.
