H iljadu sedamsto i neke jedan lovac gonio je ga- zelu kroz pustinju. Trka za život bila je duga i mučna, oboje su već gubili snagu osećajući da će vreli pesak postati njihova grobnica. A onda je gaze- la stala. Lovac nije mogao da veru- je kada je ugledao bistru, slatku vo- du. Sklopili su prećutni sporazum da dovedu svoje bližnje do vode i nastave da žive u prijateljstvu. Na tom mestu danas je čudesni grad, prestonica Ujedinjenih Arapskih Emirata. Ime je dobio, bar ako je ve- rovati legendi sa početka ove pri- če, po lovcu i gazeli. Abu Dabi u di- rektnom prevodu sa arapskog znači otac gazele. Naravno, to je samo jedna od mnogih priča o tome zašto je ovaj neverovatni grad dobio ime po ga- zelama. Činjenica jeste da je sredi- nom 18. veka tamo počeo da buja život. Arapska plemena naselila su taj prostor i živela uobičajenim be- duinskim načinom života. Moderna istorija, međutim, počinje 1971. sti- canjem nezavisnosti od Velike Bri- tanije i vizijom čoveka koji je uda-

The hunter could not believe his eyes when he saw clear, fresh water. They made a tacit agree- ment to bring their loved ones to this water and to continue to live in friend- ship. Today this is the site of the mi- raculous city that is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It was named, at least if you believe the legend from the beginning of the story, after the hunter and the gazelle. Directly trans- lated from Arabic, Abu Dhabi means ‘Father of the Gazelle’... Of course, that is just one of many stories about why this amazing city is named after gazelles. The fact is that in the mid-eighteenth century life be- gan to flourish there. Arabian tribes inhabited the area, living the Bedouin lifestyle.
