JERMA CANYON: SPECIAL NATURE RESERVE
The canyon of the river Jerma represents a unique complex of geomorphological and hydrographic forms and processes, with an imposing valley of steep cliffs reaching a height of 600-700 metres. Located 30 km from Pirot, this part of the river valley and the gorge form a protected area known as the “Jerma” Special Nature Reserve. It boasts as much as 27 per cent of the flora of Serbia, with a large number of endemic and rare species. The nature reserve encompasses the massifs of Greben and Vlaška mountains, with caves and natural phenomena that are specific to this part of Serbia. Jerma Canyon is also the narrowest canyon in Serbia and Europe. It is only 1.5 metres wide, which is why it has another name in the area where it is at its narrowest: Cediljka [Strainer].
