UVAC CANYON: MAGNIFICENT SNAKING MEANDERS
This is one of those beauty spots of Serbia that has been seen by more foreign tourists than domestic ones. The River Uvac is located in southwestern Serbia, between the towns of Nova Varoš and Sjenica, at a distance of 250 km from Belgrade. Apart from all the beauty, the top attraction is the canyon valley of the Uvac, with its magnificent steep cliffs that reach heights of up to 350 metres. Uvac Canyon is known for its meanders, which are carved out of limestone rock and look magnificent. They were created just 40 years ago, with the flooding of the old canyon for the purposes of the construction of the Uvac hydroelectric power plant. It was then that the riverbed began lowering and the river forced its way through the softest parts of the rocks, forming these extremely deep and picturesque curves. Although boat rides are remembered for the artificial lake and meanders, that which leaves visitors breathless is the view of the canyon from one of the vantage points.
Pristine nature provides ideal habitat for the griffon vulture, which was threatened by extinction until two decades ago. Uvac is today home to the largest colony of griffon vultures in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. It is precisely because of them that tourist boats and catamarans are only permitted to make one voyage through the area per day, so be sure to book a ride on time for this exceptional experience. You can find accommodation at one of numerous private houses.
